Antebellum - Janelle Monáe

In March 2019, it was announced Janelle Monae had joined the cast of the film, with Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz directing from a screenplay they wrote. Ray Mansfield and Sean McKittrick will serve as producers on the film under their QC Entertainment banner, while Lionsgate will distribute. In April 2019, Eric Lange, Jena Malone, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, Tongayi Chirisa, Gabourey Sidibe, Robert Aramayo and Lily Cowles joined the cast of the film. In May 2019, Marque Richardson joined the cast of the film.

Janelle Monae is returning to the big screen in the highly anticipated thriller Antebellum, which is about a Black woman who is transported back to the Antebellum South. But expect the unexpected when it comes to this film exploring one of the most horrific eras in America’s history.

Antebellum is a 2020 American horror drama film, written and directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz and produced by Sean McKittrick, one of the producers of Get Out and Us. The film stars Janelle Monae, Eric Lange, Jena Malone, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, and Gabourey Sidibe. Antebellum is scheduled to be released on April 24, 2020, by Lionsgate.

The details about the film are scarce but from the creepy trailer it appears when Veronica Henley, Monae’s character, is mysteriously transported back in time to a plantation, she prepares to fight. This is clearly a spin on previous films about slavery with even a superhero twist.

Janelle Monae is dealing with a time-traveling nightmare of slavery in Lionsgate’s latest trailer for the horror film Antebellum. In the footage of trailer, Monae portrays modern-day author Veronica Henley, shown explaining how women are the future: “We’re expected to be seen, not heard. But we are the future. Our time is now.”
